Wall Sconce | FREYA

A slim, vertical steel column mounted flat against the wall, letting a ribbon of light slip out from below: this vertical wall sconce works as an architectural element. Designed by Thoro, the Freya sconce comes in four heights, from 60 to 150 cm, in five matte colors, and takes a GU10 bulb.

A steel column wall sconce with architectural lines

The Freya sconce is a steel profile measuring 8 cm by 6 cm, with sharp edges and a rectangular section. This very architectural look suits minimalist interiors, lofts and contemporary spaces. On its own, it highlights a wall; in a series, it sets the rhythm of an entire wall.

You first notice a colored line, then a point of light at its base, like a discreet punctuation mark. The body of this column wall sconce stays dark above the beam, which further accentuates its verticality and shows off the ceiling height.

A GU10 sconce with downward-directed light

The light source sits at the base of the column and shines downward. At the foot of the sconce it draws a cone of light that grazes the wall and reveals its texture, whether plaster, wood or concrete. This is ambient rather than functional lighting, which complements a ceiling light or spotlights by adding depth.

This GU10 sconce works with an LED bulb with a maximum power of 10 W. The bulb is not included, which lets you choose the temperature and the beam angle: a warm white around 3000 K brings out the texture of the wall, a narrow angle gives a crisp line and a wide angle gives more diffuse lighting. The sconce is rated IP20, for indoor use in dry rooms.

Four heights from 60 to 150 cm and five matte colors

The 60 cm version fits next to a door, an entryway mirror or on either side of a headboard. The 90 cm and 120 cm versions dress a larger section of wall, in a stairwell or behind a sofa. The 150 cm model, a true long wall sconce, asserts itself in large spaces and on accent walls.

As for colors, white and beige blend into a light wall and let the light play the leading role. Black stands out clearly against a light wall. Olive green and red ochre bring warmth and pair well with natural wood, rattan or terracotta.

A wall sconce for the living room, bedroom or entryway

In a living room, a designer wall sconce like Freya gives structure to the wall behind the sofa. In a bedroom, two 60 cm columns frame the bed. Nothing prevents you from combining several lengths: aligned at the bottom or at the top, they create a very personal composition. Use the same bulb throughout and keep the spacing regular.

The electrical connection must be carried out by a qualified electrician. The column is attached to a mounting rail screwed to the wall. For maintenance, a soft, dry cloth is enough to dust the steel.
